When you are asleep, your immune system releases cytokines, proteins that aid in sleep. Prolonged sleep deprivation or insomnia may reduce the production of these protective proteins. Even worse, when you do not get enough sleep, your antibodies and cells are reduced, putting you at a high risk of infection.
